Healthy Greek Yogurt Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

There’s a special kind of joy in taking warm cinnamon rolls out of the oven on a brisk morning. These high-protein cinnamon rolls offer all the enchantment without excessive sugar or unhealthy ingredients. My children adore them, and since they contain no yeast, they can be ready in under an hour!

As more people turn their focus to protein for its role in muscle building and preservation, the market has seen a surge in protein bars available in various flavors, with more brands incorporating protein into numerous foods. While I support the increase in protein, the quality of ingredients is crucial. Additives like GMO soy protein or whey protein sourced from CAFO cattle may be more detrimental than beneficial.

Although we may not be ready to find healthy high-protein cinnamon rolls in a tube at the nearest grocery store just yet, making them at home is a breeze!

Healthy Cinnamon Rolls

So, can cinnamon rolls be considered healthy? While they don’t quite belong in the same category as pasture-raised meats or organic vegetables, you can create a healthier variant. These protein cinnamon rolls are naturally sweetened with coconut sugar and raw honey, steering clear of sugar alcohols often found in no-sugar cinnamon roll recipes, which can lead to digestive discomfort for many. Instead, these rolls are subtly sweet and utterly delectable.

Protein Cinnamon Roll Ingredients

Now that my Hashimoto’s is behind me and I can indulge in a broader range of healthy foods, I’ll occasionally consume gluten. While I still steer clear of bleached, enriched, glyphosate-sprayed conventional flour, I sometimes opt for organic flour when baking. You can easily make these protein cinnamon rolls gluten-free by utilizing a gluten-free flour blend—just ensure it features clean ingredients, like this one.

Greek yogurt serves as a primary ingredient in the creamy frosting, providing a protein boost to the rolls. For a dairy-free option, a thick coconut milk yogurt could be used, although I haven’t tried that personally.

Rather than using cottage cheese or whey protein in these rolls, I opted for a different protein variant. I chose Equip Prime protein, made from beef protein, collagen, and gelatin. It’s a nose-to-tail protein source without a gritty or strong beef taste. If you don’t have it available, collagen powder can be a suitable alternative.

Protein Cinnamon Roll Dough

Greek Yogurt Frosting

  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (whole milk for best texture)
  • 2 TBSP raw honey (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, protein powder, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and coconut sugar by whisking together.
  • Next, incorporate the Greek yogurt and melted coconut oil, stirring until a soft dough forms. If the mixture appears too dry, add milk or water a tablespoon at a time until it comes together.
  • Knead gently on a floured surface for 1–2 minutes, just until it becomes smooth.
  • Roll out the dough into a rectangle approximately ¼ inch thick. Evenly spread softened butter over the surface.
  • In a small bowl, blend the coconut sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle this mixture evenly over the dough.
  • Tightly roll it up into a log and cut into 8 equal-sized rolls.
  • Arrange the rolls in a greased 8×8-inch baking dish or a parchment-lined skillet. Bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before frosting.
  • In a medium bowl or stand mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add Greek yogurt, honey, vanilla, salt, and (if desired) protein powder. Mix until thick and creamy. Generously spread this over the warm rolls, ensuring they are not too hot.

Serving High Protein Cinnamon Rolls

These are particularly delightful when still warm and fresh from the oven. If you plan to enjoy them later, consider holding off on the frosting until it’s time to serve. Leftover rolls can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
