Every parent knows the dread that comes when illness strikes the household. I vividly recall a time when all my kids caught a stomach bug simultaneously while I was away. Thankfully, this was an unusual occurrence for us, but it served as a wake-up call to keep our natural remedies within reach.
Though we aren’t frequently unwell, winter brings its own share of sniffles and coughs. Whether it’s a minor cold during cleaning, or one of the little ones catching something, having effective remedies handy is essential for everyone’s comfort.
One favorite remedy I turn to is this herbal throat spray. It’s beneficial for soothing a sore throat, alleviating coughs, and easing congestion.
Herbal Throat Spray Ingredients
This throat spray uses a potent herbal tincture combined with raw honey. The blend of herbs not only brings quick relief but also offers longer-lasting benefits for boosting immunity. You can select from various throat-soothing herbs, but I’ve found these particular ones to be especially effective:
- Echinacea root – This herb carries antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It eases throat irritation and supports the immune system, proving especially effective for conditions like strep throat or tonsillitis.
- Ginger – Known for its warming properties, ginger stimulates circulation and thins mucus in the body. It reduces inflammation and can help curb pain.
- Marshmallow root – This herb provides a soothing coating that calms inflamed or dry tissues and supports respiratory health.
- Elderberry – A traditional remedy for throat inflammation, it also aids in reducing nasal congestion and acts as an expectorant.
- Thyme – This herb is excellent for clearing congestion and mucus in the lungs, enhancing breathing, and boasting antimicrobial properties.
- Peppermint – A refreshing addition, peppermint not only provides flavor but also helps tackle various infections.
- Cayenne – Known for its warming effects, cayenne can boost circulation and is traditionally used for sore throats, but you may want to adjust the amount based on spice preferences.
You don’t need to incorporate every single herb from this list to create an effective throat spray. Simply adjust the mix based on what you have available. I typically create an herbal tincture with my preferred herbs and blend it with raw honey, ensuring a long-lasting spray stored in the fridge.
Premade Herbal Throat Spray
If making a tincture isn’t viable or if you’re out of ingredients, I recommend a commercially available herbal throat spray that includes echinacea and propolis, alongside the propolis throat spray that my family enjoys.
Herbal Throat Spray Tincture
To prepare the tincture, mix 1 tablespoon of the following dried herbs: Echinacea, Ginger, Marshmallow Root, Elderberry, Thyme, and Mint, plus 1 teaspoon of dried cayenne pepper (optional) in a pint-size mason jar.
Fill the jar with a strong food-grade liquor, like rum or vodka (at least 80-proof). Close with an airtight lid and place it in a cool, dark spot for at least two weeks up to eight weeks for a stronger tincture. I make enough to last the entire year.

As winter arrives, keep this herbal throat spray handy. It’s a great way to find some comfort when cold symptoms arise. Here’s how to prepare the tincture version.
DIY Herbal Throat Spray Recipe
- Add the herbs to a pint-size Mason jar.
- Pour alcohol over the herbs, leaving a ½ inch headspace.
- Cap tightly with the lid and let the tincture steep for 2-4 weeks, shaking occasionally.
- Once the tincture is done, strain out the herbs and reserve the liquid.
- For every 6 Tablespoons of tincture add 2 Tablespoons of raw honey.
- Shake well to combine and store in the fridge for up to 6 months.
- Pour some into a small spray bottle for easy use as needed.
Two Hour Herbal Throat Spray Tincture
If waiting isn’t in the cards, there’s a quicker method available:
- Combine 1 teaspoon each of the herbs in a pint-sized glass jar.
- Pour boiling water to cover the herbs completely.
- Allow it to steep for 20 minutes until the water cools.
- Strain the herbs and mix with equal parts of a strong alcohol. I often use rum or vodka.
- For every 3 parts of herbal liquid, blend in 1 part honey.
This version remains effective for a few weeks when stored in the fridge.
More Throat Spray Variations
If herbal tinctures with alcohol are not your preference, you can try making a glycerite using vegetable glycerin. Though less potent, glycerites are still valuable and require slightly more application.
Alternatively, brewing a strong herbal tea mixed with honey is an option. Just keep in mind that this should be used within a week for best results.
